The first catalogue for Sanskrit palm leaf manuscripts was prepared during the reign of King Serfoji II by one Sadasiva Bhatta alias Gangadhara Bhatta in 1801 A.D. The catalogue for paper manuscripts was prepared in the year 1807 A.D. Later in 1840 and 1857 catalogues afresh were prepared by the orders of King Shivaji II and the then District Collector Forbes respectively.

Dr. A.C. Burnell who studied the above catalogues and prepared another new catalogue with the assistance of Pandits and published two volumes in 1879 and in 1880 A.D. Dr. Burnell's compilation method is followed till today.

Sri P.P.S.Sastri compiled 19 volumes of the latest Descriptive Catalogues for Sanskrit language during 1933-34 and published them with Index. Later on the Library Pandits prepared 4 volumes of Descriptive Catalogues. A total number of 24,432 titles are catalogued and these are now in use. Now 8,818 title cards for Palm leaf manuscripts and 3,076 title cards for Paper manuscripts have been prepared recently for the later collections. So, a total number of 36,326 titles are available in the Sanskrit Manuscript Section. The scripts used for Sanskrit language are Grantha, Devanagari, Nandinagari, Telugu and a few in Malayalam, Kannada, Oriya and etc.

The Sanskrit Manuscript Collection of this Library is dates back to 16th century A.D. The Manuscripts used by the Poets and Kings during the Nayak and Maratha period are seen even today.
